NAS Induction New Follows

As part of its mandate as the foremost independent scientific body in Nigeria, the NAS inducted its 2021 cycle of new Fellows on May 20th 2021. The inducted Fellows, distinguished scientists in various fields, had been elected earlier in the year at the 2021 Annual General Meeting that held in January through a highly competitive process.

The induction ceremony was preceded by a ‘Public Lecture’ on “Science, Medicine and the Society: The Three Intricate Nexus in Development of Therapeutic Signature” delivered by Professor Olatunde Farombi FAS. He pointed out that medicinal plants and herbs played key roles in the maintenance of health and management of chronic diseases. For example, he said new therapeutic signatures from Garcinia kola (Bitter kola) such as Kolaviron may qualify as multitargeted agents for chemoprevention of chronic diseases.

He emphasized the need for the NAS and other academies to work hand-in-hand to promote and project translational research for the benefit of the society.
