NAS presents NAS Gold Medal of Science

The Nigerian Academy of Science awarded the 2023 NAS Gold Medal Prize for Life Sciences to Professor Rufus Olusola Akinyemi, a Professor of Geriatric Neurology and Translational Neuroscience at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The award ceremony was held on Wednesday, 24th of January, 2024 in Lagos. Dr. Sonny Kuku FAS, the NAS Science Prize Committee chairman, introduced the winner of the 2023 NAS Gold Medal.

Professor Akinyemi then delivered his award lecture. His research, over the last decade, has focused on stroke, post-stroke vascular cognitive impairment, dementia (PSVCID), and stroke biobanking. This has yielded novel outputs of potential impact on millions of Africans and global populations in this era of precision medicine.

The Academy’s President, Professor Ekanem Braide, FAS, presented the award which consists of a medal, a certificate, and a purse, to Professor Akinyemi.

The NAS Gold Medal was instituted by the NAS in 2016, to be awarded to deserving Nigerian scientists who have made significant achievements in science, found to be of national relevance and global resonance. The award is made annually, alternating between the Life and Physical Sciences.
