NAS holds Induction and Public Lecture

To continue achieving its mission of establishing and maintaining the highest standard of scientific
endeavours in Nigeria, the Academy increased its Fellowship at an induction ceremony of
distinguished scientists held in Abuja on the 18th of May, 2023. 10 distinguished scientists were
The induction ceremony was preceded with a public lecture titled ‘Great Nations Pay Heed to
Nurturing the Mental Health of the Developing Brain’. The lecture was delivered by Professor
Olayinka Omigbodun FAS, Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

The inducted Fellows were:
Professor Esther Akinlabi FAS is a seasoned Mechanical Engineer with many years served in
research academia and administration. Her research fields of expertise are in friction stir welding
and additive manufacturing. She is a leader in friction stir welding technology on the African
continent and ranked top three, globally, in additive manufacturing in terms of publication metrics.

Professor Paul Abdu FAS is a Professor of Avian Medicine at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He
helped to develop the Avian, Aquatic, and Wildlife Medicine, and was a member of the pioneer
Fellows of the College of Veterinary Surgeons Nigeria that established the veterinary medicine
residency programme in Nigeria.

Professor Wasiu Adeyemo FAS is a Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the College of
Medicine University of Lagos. He is currently the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC),

Professor Henry Fadamiro FAS is a Professor of Entomology & Pest Management at Texas A&M
University, College Station, Texas, USA. Fadamiro has maintained strong ties with institutions in
Nigeria and has established endowment funds for academic excellence at Nigerian universities. He
has been recognized for his significant contributions to the advancement of science and human
capacity development in Africa.

Professor Adesegun Fatusi FAS is a Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine. He has
been a lead researcher and actor in the adolescent health field in Nigeria since the 1990s. He is
currently the Vice Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

Professor Olukemi Odukoya FAS has been a Professor of Pharmacognosy at the University of
Lagos since 2007. She pioneered the first Nigerian Herbal Therapeutics Laboratory at the Faculty of
Pharmacy, University of Lagos, and has translated some of her research results into nine products
registered with NAFDAC.

Professor Gideon Okpokwasili FAS rose through the ranks to become Full Professor, in 1996, in
the area of Environmental Microbiology and Bioremediation. His research outputs include 180
journal publications, 25 conference proceedings, and a hydrocarbon degrading palmwine isolate
deposited at the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Rockville, USA. His publications have
been cited by 3544 authors and with a h-index of 31 on Google Scholar.

Professor Okechukwu Onukwuli FAS is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Nnamdi Azikiwe
University, Awka. Onukwuli has developed some local clay-based catalysts for biodiesel production
and produced roofing sheets that meet standard water absorption and thermal properties using
polyester modified cementraffia palm fibre ash composite.

Professor Morenike Ukpong FAS is a Professor of Paediatric Dentistry at the Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile-Ife. She works at the Department of Child Dental Health, Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile-Ife, and has 267 publications with a H index of 44 and 11037 citations. She
successfully combines research and advocacy for the development of national policies and

Professor Emmanuel Unuabonah FAS is a Professor of Chemistry at Redeemers University,
Nigeria. His research work is focused on the development of relatively cheap functional materials
for the treatment of water and wastewater. He is currently the Director of Academic Planning and
Quality Assurance, Redeemers University, and also the Director of the Redeemers University
African Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER)
