THE FELLOWSHIP/BECOMING A FELLOW

The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) is a member-based organization electing distinguished scientists into its Fellowship annually. Fellows are at the core of the Academy’s resource science advice and other services provided to the government and various other stakeholders.

The process of being elected to the Fellowship begins with nomination by a Fellow at the Academy. Usually, this principal nominator (who should be in the same broad academic area as the candidate) would submit a nomination form on behalf of the candidate. Nomination usually opens in June and closes in July each year. Subsequently, the candidates are screened by appropriate Sectional Committees (Mathematical/ Physical, Health, Biological, Chemical, Agricultural, Engineering/Space, and Environmental/Earth) before recommending a few to the Council for shortlisting. Shortlisted candidates will be presented to the general assembly for election. Successful candidates would be those who scored at least half of the total votes cast.

The Fellows who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields both locally and internationally are elected through a highly competitive process.

Some Fellows have served as Vice-Chancellors of universities, Directors-General of government parastatals, while others have held cabinet-level appointments with the Federal Government or holding the nation’s most prestigious academic and professional merit awards. The Academy, given its clout, also has the ability to attract other experts from around the country and internationally when needed.
