The world celebrated World Oceans Day

The world celebrated World Oceans Day on the 8th of June, 2021. The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) in a press statement endorsed by the Nigerian Academy of Science and majority of IAP members, urges world leaders to improve ocean health by stopping habitat destruction and the spread of environmental contaminants, fighting climate change and overexploitation, and adopting evidence-based policies.

THE NIGERIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE INDUCTS FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT

The Nigerian Academy of Science, at its Annual General Meeting virtually held on Thursday, 28th of January, 2021 has inducted Professor EkanemIkpi Braide FAS as President of the Nigerian Academy of Science.

Braide, who is the 19th President of the Academy, is the Academy’s first female President in 44 years of existence.

Professor Braide, a professor of Parasitology/Epidemiology was a member of the national committee that achieved the laudable feat of guinea worm eradication in Nigeria. She has a rich professional experience as a researcher and an administrator. Read more

Call to change educational practices to allow future generations to tackle climate change.
The world’s academies of science release a ‘Statement on Climate Change and Education’
For the remainder of the 21st century and beyond, climate change poses an existential threat to humanity. Under the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, the world’s nations agreed to keep global temperature rises to within 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels. One degree of that rise has already occurred. However, in the recent COP23 meeting held in Bonn, Germany, we are still heading towards 3 degrees rise, and possibly more. Read more
